Meaningful Scribbles: Do We Pray to Change God, or to Change Ourselves?

Dr. Amer Maloka

Modern human beings live in an unprecedented age of scientific, technological, and material progress. Humanity has explored space, decoded genes, and overcome distances through modern communication. Yet, despite all this progress, many people continue to experience anxiety, confusion, and a sense of emptiness. The more people possess material things, the more they sometimes seem to lose their sense of meaning.

Modern societies have increasingly moved toward materialism and consumerism, where a person's value is often measured by what they own and by their professional success rather than by their humanity. This raises an important question: Can a person live without faith?

Some may believe that faith is unnecessary. Yet human beings naturally seek something to believe in. If they do not believe in God, they may place their faith in money, power, fame, science, or even themselves. A person cannot easily live without a meaning that gives direction and hope. This is why many people who have wealth, success, and fame still experience an inner emptiness. Material needs alone cannot satisfy the deepest needs of the human soul.

Faith is not simply a collection of religious practices or rituals. Above all, it is a living relationship with God that gives meaning to life and helps people face suffering, fear, and death. Faith does not eliminate questions or suffering, but it gives a person the strength to face them with hope.

At the heart of this relationship with God is prayer, which is often misunderstood. Some people approach prayer as if it were a way of persuading God to change His decisions or grant their personal wishes. But this raises the central question: Do we pray to change God, or so that the human person may change?

God does not need to change, because His love and mercy remain constant. Human beings, however, are the ones who need transformation. True prayer is not an attempt to change God's will, but an opening of ourselves to His will. When a person prays sincerely, he does not so much change God's heart as allow God to change his own heart.

How many people enter prayer angry and leave with greater peace? How many carry fear and despair in their hearts and then discover through prayer a new strength to continue their journey? Prayer does not always change our circumstances, but it often changes the way we see those circumstances. It may not remove the cross, but it gives us the strength to carry it.

Modern society needs, more than ever, to recover the spiritual dimension of life. Technology alone cannot give us inner peace. Money cannot buy love, and success cannot guarantee happiness. Human beings do not live by bread alone; they also need hope, meaning, and love.

Modern humanity has succeeded in changing the world around it, but it is still called to change the world within itself. This is where faith and prayer have their role—not as a means of escaping reality, but as a force that enables people to live reality with greater awareness, deeper love, and an enduring hope.

In the end, a person may live for many years far from God, yet deep within, he will continue searching for a meaning that goes beyond material things, for a peace that possessions cannot provide, and for a love that does not end. For no matter how far the human heart may wander, it remains thirsty for the Absolute. Faith remains one of humanity's deepest expressions of its enduring search for truth and meaning.
