Anne Carson
Paulus Assyrian
The autumn of creativity in Canada today
is fragrant and aglow with colorful stars
marking the moment its poet, Anne Carson,
won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Our pens are perfumed by the breeze of her poems,
racing to share her creative genius in the Arabic language—
the language we understand.
Now, writers and poets—especially those in the diaspora like myself—
are composing love poems to a poet
who knows nothing of them,
who has never even heard their names;
yet, the act of writing the poem unites them all.
They scurry like ants, bearing their gifts
toward the nest where the poet dwells,
though they do not even know her address—
whether she is in Toronto, Ottawa, or Windsor, Canada.
They keep circling the map of Canada,
searching for the Nobel laureate
so they might offer her a bouquet of our springtime poems.
Come, poets of Canada, let us walk
together, like flocks of doves,
to the headquarters of the Writers' Union of Canada
to deliver our tribute.
